Limits and self-exclusion: what a restriction covers
Restriction tools are settings inside an account, not protection created by law. On an offshore site that distinction decides everything: a limit placed on a Biglucky account binds that account and nothing else. What follows is the logic of the tools, the reason changing a limit is deliberately not equally fast in both directions, and the single misunderstanding Finnish players most often bring with them.
A Veikkaus ban does not reach this far
Many people assume that a self-imposed ban registered with Veikkaus closes off gambling everywhere. It does not. The Veikkaus ban applies to Veikkaus games and services, and it does not extend to a site operating under an international licence. There is currently no shared national register passing a restriction from one operator to another. The consequence is uncomfortable and simple: somebody who has banned themselves at Veikkaus can still open an account on an offshore site unless they also place a restriction there. The reverse holds too — an exclusion set here is invisible to every other operator.
The tools and what separates them
| Tool | What it caps | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Money entering the account per day, week or month | The baseline setting, best applied right after opening the account |
| Loss limit | Net loss over the chosen period | When winnings are recycled and a deposit limit never fills up |
| Time limit | The length of an uninterrupted session | When the issue is hours rather than any single amount |
| Time-out | Logging in, for a defined stretch of weeks | When distance is needed but a permanent decision is not |
| Self-exclusion | Use of the account for a long period or permanently | When the intention is to stop altogether |
A deposit limit counts money arriving, not money lost. That detail matters: if winnings are played back, the deposit limit can stay untouched while the sums involved grow, which is exactly the situation a loss limit is designed for.
Why tightening and loosening are not symmetrical
Setting a new limit or lowering an existing one generally takes effect immediately, since nobody should have to wait in order to spend less. Raising one is delayed on purpose, with the increase taking effect only after a cooling period. The logic is that an increase made in the middle of a session cannot affect that session. An active time-out is normally not lifted before its term expires, and customer service is not a way around it — that is the tool functioning as intended rather than failing.
Barriers outside the account
Account settings only work when a player logs into their own account, so the layer outside it matters too. Blocking software installed in a browser or on a device shuts out gambling sites as a category, which removes the need to remember any individual address. Many banks offer a payment-block feature that can stop gambling-related card or account payments; the name and the conditions differ between banks, so it is a question for your own bank. The third layer is human: the support services and people described on the responsible gambling page, because a technical barrier addresses access rather than cause.
What happens to the balance
Self-exclusion does not mean losing the money in the account. The balance is withdrawn as part of the process and follows the ordinary rules: a minimum withdrawal of 20 €, and a first withdrawal that requires verification processed in one to two business days. That is the argument for having documents in order in advance, as described on the registration page — otherwise setting the restriction and getting the money out collide in the same moment. An active bonus can also tie up the balance through its wagering condition.
What 2027 could change
The licensing system is scheduled to open in 2027, and on the basis of the preparatory work licensed operators would share a register of player-set restrictions under a new licensing and supervisory authority. If the timetable holds, a single restriction could then cover several operators. As things stand a restriction is always account-specific and has to be set by the player on every site individually; the operator's own support desk can help with the mechanics.
